Procrastination Doesn’t Work – Insights from the Wilderness #113

Procrastination Doesn't Work

It’s human nature to put off making the difficult decisions in our lives. We tell ourselves that it would be better to wait until tomorrow because—–and then we fill in the blank. The problem with this approach to life is “tomorrow” can stretch into a lifetime of unrealized dreams.

Unfortunately there is always a good reason why we feel we should wait until tomorrow. This is especially true when it comes to personal growth issues such as changing jobs, saving more money for retirement, getting more training or education, starting a new hobby, or spending more time with your children or grand children, or losing weight.

It is also true when it comes to collective issues that impact the future of our species and our planet such as global warming, energy independence, depletion of our planets natural resources, or global population growth.

We would rather live with the illusion that tomorrow we’ll be in a better place to begin making those changes and dealing with those issues.

Why Procrastination Doesn’t Work

Reality says differently. Reality reminds us that time does not wait for us. If our desire is living a full and meaningful life tomorrow it can only be achieved through the will and courage to begin taking action—-today.

Everything we do, every choice we make, every action we take is going to result in bringing either positive energy or negative energy into our lives.

When we choose to put off making difficult decisions until tomorrow, we are making the unconscious choice to live with the negative energy of status quo and homeostasis. We are putting off the opportunity to begin bringing positive energy into our lives.

We are standing still. We are resisting the universe.

The entire universe evolves through change. Everything in the universe is in a constant state of change. Homeostasis, or standing still, is resisting that reality. When we resist reality, we invite the negative energy of pain and suffering into our lives. Resisting reality is never a good idea.

The choice to bring positive energy into our lives requires intentionality, an awakened self-aware consciousness, and the courage to embrace change. Until we incorporate the wisdom of these three insights into our lives, we are unconsciously allowing the negative energy of homeostasis to control our lives.

Reality reminds us that unless we are fully alive, changing and growing, we are dying. Standing still is choosing to embrace death.

On A Personal Level

When we unconsciously embrace homeostasis by resisting those changes that we know we should be making in our personal lives, we are standing still.

In her book Field of Compassion, author Judy Cannato reminds us standing still and resisting change is not possible if our goal is to live a fully alive “human” life.

“Each of us are a field of energy and information rooted in the body but extending out from the body, interacting with the energy and information of others. None of us is a discreet, separate unit, but an integrated system of interactions and relationships connected to all.”

From A Collective Point Of View

When we embrace homeostasis by resisting those changes that we know we should be making collectively as a species, we are again unconsciously allowing the negative energy of homeostasis to continue its dark work in our world. We are standing still. We are standing silent watching our planet slowly dying. We are resisting change rather than working with nature and evolution.

As Chief Seattle reminded us so many years ago, ……….

“This we know. The earth does not belong to people. People belong to the earth.  This we know. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the people of the earth. We did not weave the web of life. We are but a mere strand in it.  Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.

In this universe, homeostasis or standing still is not an option. Individually and collectively, we are consciously awakened, making choices, growing, and embracing the reality of change, or we are passively choosing death.

An awakened consciousness embraces change and works “with” the Divine Evolutionary Impulse to Becomes immanent in all of creation——and we align with our deepest recognition of what is ultimate truth one small decision at a time——every day.
