What is Your Life Purpose? – Insights from the Wilderness #12

What is Your Life Purpose? This is a question that I have been wrestling with most of my life. It was also the underlying question that brought many depressed and unhappy clients into my counseling office.

We could ask the question this way.  “Am I growing and becoming?” “Am I using my unique gifts to make a difference in the world?”

It has taken the universe 14.7 billion years of evolution to create the human species. We are the highest known level of consciousness that has ever evolved in this corner of the galaxy.

The evolutionary process is not random. It is a process that has direction and is headed somewhere. From hydrogen gas, to matter, to life, to animal consciousness, and now to human consciousness…..it is clearly a process that has meaning and purpose.

Through 14.7 billion years the gentle persuasion of the Creator has been urging the universe towards greater cooperation and compassion, increased complexity, deeper communication, greater consciousness, and a growing sense of universal unity…..a universal connectedness.

It is clear that we are not the end product of evolution.

Unfortunately, the chaos and violence created by the primitive ego of our species is currently moving us away from the evolutionary possibilities of the Creator’s gentle persuasion. In fact, at the present time, the collective primitive ego of our species is attempting to destroy the life support system of the planet that birthed us.

If we could move beyond the core-consciousness of our unconscious inner-child and become  enlightened Co-Creators working with the evolutionary process instead of against it….who knows what we could accomplish and what it could mean for each of us personally?

Maturing our individual primitive ego consciousness, and learning to embrace an intentional growth in self-awareness, are not lofty philosophic concepts. They are arguably the most urgent and necessary challenges currently facing our species.

So back to the question I posed above.

What is your life purpose? Why are you here? What are you supposed to be doing with your unique gifts and talents? What is the gentle persuasion of the Creator urging you to contribute to this 14.7 billion year evolutionary story?

Most of us are not working “with” the evolutionary impulse. To “become and grow”, we need to discover the answers to those questions, and learn to free the restless creative impulse that resides in each of us. If we are in alignment with the evolutionary impulse inside us, we will become a happier more gentle person.

Barbara Marx Hubbard says “we need to learn to pay attention to the internal compass that points toward joy, and then find the courage to move toward it.”

All of us are driven to create meaning and purpose, but passion for life will come to us only when each of us discovers the reason we are here.

Everyone has unique gifts. Happiness requires discovering what they are and then offering those gifts to the universe. And this is best accomplished in community…not alone.

It’s not our job to figure out how the universe will use our gifts……our job is simply to offer them to the best of our ability.

Our happiness will depend on how well accomplish that goal.

Hi Francine….sometimes it feels like we learn things too late to be helpful. But that is just a feeling……it’s never too late to rewrite your life story.
I hear people say that when they are in their forties for example. What I say to them if you live to be 80, that’s 40 years. Would you tell a teenage not to go to college because they will probably die when they’re sixty? We don’t know what the future will bring, but rewriting and living a new life story will bring energy and passion into your life……and it’s never too late for that experience!! So decide what you would like you’re life to look like and begin creating it. The fun is in the process and the journey…..not simply reaching the goal.
So roll up your sleeves and start making your dreams happen.
